Roses are not only beautiful flowers, but also perfect decorative elements that are ideal for creative projects and long-lasting arrangements. But how do you preserve their beauty over a longer period of time? In this blog post, we will show you various methods of drying or even preserving our roses from Ecuador from Rosenbörse. Whether you prefer the classic techniques or want to try something new – here you will find practical instructions that will make your roses shine for a long time!
Three simple techniques for drying roses
There are a few proven methods for drying roses properly. We will tell you the classic and the simplest method.
- Air-drying roses: Attach your roses to a piece of string and hang them upside down in a dry and dark room. Make sure that you do not tie the string too tightly, it must not cut into the stem under any circumstances. After about 2 weeks, the roses are dry and can be sealed with a little hairspray to protect them from dust.
- Drying roses in salt: This is the best trick to preserve the rich colors of your roses as well as possible. To do this, take a sealable container and fill it with some salt. Then place your roses in the container and pour in so much salt that your roses are completely covered. Now you can close the container and enjoy your freshly dried roses after a waiting period of 2 – 3 weeks.
- Drying roses in detergent: Yes, you read that right, that’s also possible! And it works exactly the same way as drying in salt. With the detergent, however, you should shake the container a little so that all the cavities of the roses are really covered with detergent.
Preservation with glycerine
If you want to preserve your roses in a different way than drying them, then we recommend preservation with glycerine, which makes the roses look like they are freshly picked for a long time, but may require 2 – 3 attempts until the result is perfect.
- Get the roses of your choice as fresh as possible. (the fresher, the better)
- Then cut them at an angle as described above with a sharp knife without serrations. The stem should be a maximum of 20 cm long; the shorter the stem, the faster the rose is preserved.
- Now mix glycerine with lukewarm water (ratio 50/50) and pour the mixture into a vase. You can find glycerine in hardware stores or in some pharmacies.
- Place the freshly cut roses in the vase with the water/glycerine mixture. The preservation process takes 2–3 days, depending on the rose.
- When small drops form on the blossom, the preservation process is complete. Your roses are ready to be taken out of the vase and used as a stylish decoration without water.
In a time when perfectionism is often placed above everything else, accepting imperfections is a real superpower – both in love and in life. A partnership that offers space for authenticity is not only stronger, but also more fulfilling. And sometimes a simple gesture, like giving a rose, can express all this: «I love you – with all your thorns.»
Care of dried roses:
- Make sure that your dried roses do not come into contact with water.
- You should also never spray them.
- Never expose your dried roses to direct sunlight.
- Blow off dust occasionally, you can use a hair dryer on a low setting.
